Sunday Night In brings you the news about South Australian books, theatre and stories that the algorithm doesn’t show you. No ads, no clickbait, and it’s free!
Hello friends! It’s a full moon in April which means Easter is coming … which means it is time to drop in to your local bookseller to stock up for your Easter reading.
This last week in South Australia: it got super hot again (fortunately I still had some Giant Twins left in the freezer to help my recover my energy after an hour too long in the garden); tens of thousands of people arrived in Kaurna country for Gather Round (and several thousand of them were in the market when I ‘just popped in’ to get some hot cross buns from my favourite bakery); and Tourism SA launched its latest campaign ‘Celebrate the Simple Pleasures’ (which to my untrained marketing eye seems pretty savvy and I absolutely love the visual art).
As for the arts? In this week’s edition of Sunday Night In we’ve got: tickets on sale to local theatre; a fabulous new initiative from ADT (Australian Dance Theatre); and some excellent workshop opportunities.
Let’s get started …
News
⭐️ Vote for the next star on the Walk of Fame at the Festival Theatre.
Quick Reminder! Do note that I usually only include an event in the newsletter once. If you want to look back over the last few issues to see what’s still on, all previous issues are available on the Sunday Night In page here.
Theatre and performance
💃 🕺🏻LOFT: this joint initiative between Australian Dance Theatre and CreateSA (formerly Arts SA in case you are like me and still not quite caught up with the change in name) is a truly wonderful initiative, like really, really wonderful. LOFT is a new space on the first floor of the Lion Arts Centre providing a whole bunch of residencies for artists with a “dancing, movement or body-based studio practice. Even if you aren’t a dancer, do go and read more about this exciting development.
⭐️ This looks fantastic: Every Single Conversation an Evening of New Work by Mali Harkin-Noack. An opportunity to hear work by a new and exciting playwright.
🎭 Bookings are open for the return of the One Act Play Festival at the Marion Cultural Centre, featuring Galleon Theatre Group, St Jude’s Players and Deadset Theatre Company.
🎟 Tickets are on sale for The Parisfal Project by Ink Pot Arts.
🎶 📽 Opera Talk is back. To coincide with their upcoming production of Flight, State Opera will be hosting a 35mm screening of ‘The Terminal, along with a panel talk by the State Opera’s Artistic Director Dane Lam, Flight Director Stephen Barlow and performers James Laing and Nina Korbe. Held at the Piccadilly Cinema, this event is free, but you need to register here.
Workshops
🎤 “Learn to be the Toast of the Hosts” in this MC and hosting workshop with Libby Trainor Parker. Libby is an excellent and in-demand MC, so you will learn a lot at this incredibly well-priced workshop.

Social media has worked really well for the arts for many years. But now? Who has any real idea where it’s heading? Local news is getting harder to find, local news about the arts harder still. Sunday Night In connects South Australian artists with audiences and South Australian audiences with artists. Share this newsletter with anyone you think might be interested. Suggest they subscribe … it’s full of great information and it’s free!
Books, readings, storytelling and writing
📕 Meet Margot McGovern in conversation with Mike Lucas talking about her new book This Stays Between Us.
✍️ Get some writing done with a creative lock-in at Prompt Creative Centre taking place over three Tuesdays in May. Writing in company can really help you to stay on track. Friendly, casual and inclusive, they even offer desks, couches or floor space so you can work where you work best. Book here.
⭐️ Also at Prompt and facilitated by Libby Trainor Parker, a Workshop on Writing Illness Well. Well known for her book and cabaret Endo Days, she describes this workshop as “part workshop, part forum and part brainstorm for artists who are wanting to write about personal health and who just need a nudge / toolkit / helping hand. Like her MC workshop described above, this is extremely well-priced and bound to be delivered with Libby’s trademark humour and generosity.
🎤 You can get along to tenx9 (theme ‘found out’), before heading off with your pile of books for Easter camping.
📕 Would you like to read two local writers currently featured in Island magazine? Here they are, a poem by David Ishaya Osu and an essay by Heather Taylor-Johnson on the front page (be quick, before the editors add new pieces!).

A disclaimer: I take a lot of care to make sure I’ve got details correct, but I’m often working on my phone or uploading things from word to substack and I spend a lot of time in places with terrible internet connections. So mistakes will happen. Please double check all of the details about events before you head out.
