š Sunday Night In #25
A residency for visual artists, a local musical, and the Cabaret Fringe has opened
Sunday Night In brings you weekly news about South Australian books, theatre and stories. No ads, no clickbait, and itās free!
Hello friends and welcome to this weekās roundup of news about local books, theatre, stories (and other arts events)
This last week (or two) in South Australia: the Red Ochre restaurant and cafe has closed leading some to speculate a connection to the redevelopment of the North Adelaide golf course; the volunteer-run cafe at the Flinders Medical Centre closed and there was also a brief strike at the hospital (but the two events arenāt related); and there were more movements in South Australiaās Legislative Council as one member left her party and will sit as an independent while another (already independent started a new party.
But weāre here for the arts, so in this weekās edition of Sunday Night In weāve got the Cabaret Fringe underway, the Cabaret Festival about to open, some great jobs, and a lot of local theatre.
Letās get started ā¦
News
š In extremely sobering news, K.A. Ren Wyld (noted in last weekās newsletter as the mentor for the InDaily emerging First Nations writer) had her black&write fellowship rescinded just hours before the award ceremony. This award was part of the State Library of Queensland literary awards. Thereās been a lot written about this over the last week, but one of the most comprehensive pieces Iāve seen is this article in InDaily.
š Windmill Theatre announced the successful teams for their Indie-mill program. There were 35 applications and four teams were selected for this two-week development program. It is packed full of some of our stateās best theatre practitioners and promises some great future works. You can read more about the program and see the successful teams here.
Theatre and performance
š One week left to catch Merrily we Roll Along by the G&S Society of South Australia. Itās getting excellent reviews by local reviewers.
š And if that lights your G&S fire, information about next weekendās auditions for The Sound of Music are available here.
š Zero Theatre Collective presents a new work reading night, featuring four writers.
𤣠If you want to try your hand at stand-up, this weekās open mic Laugh Lab (thatās Monday) is hosted by Cecilia Ronson and features Steve Sheehan. (I think Iāve already told you Iām a massive fan of Steve Sheehan, but Iāll tell you again, because heās smart, funny and wonderfully weird, and if heās trying new material itās bound to be a great night).
š Tickets are on sale for A Stretch of the Imagination by Solus Productions at Holden Street Theatres.
Social media has worked really well for the arts for many years. But now? Who has any real idea where itās heading? Local news is getting harder to find, local news about the arts harder still. Sunday Night In connects South Australian artists with audiences and South Australian audiences with artists. Share this newsletter with anyone you think might be interested. Suggest they subscribe ⦠itās full of great information and itās free!
Books, readings, storytelling and writing
š Helen Edwards will launch her new book, The Disappearing Circus at the Burnside Library.
Enjoying Sunday Night In? Share it with a friend ⦠itās another way to contribute to a vibrant local arts scene.
Festivals
š© The Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival is in full swing and the Cabaret Festival opens next week. If youāre the kind of person who feels overwhelmed by the March fringe program, these festivals are for you. No overwhelm, but still the joy of abundance.
Venues, Spaces and Places
š Expressions of interest for the Ed Tweddell Studio Residency in Central Studios Inc are now open. Awarded to an artist seeking to develop new work for an exhibition or other specified project, the residency provides six months rent-free studio space. A brilliant opportunity to spend time in the oldest continuously running studio collective in Australia and some of our most interesting and talented visual artists.
